Shortly after 11 p.m. on Sunday, February 17, 18-year-old Liana Kotsura was killed and David Tkachuk, also 18, was injured in a rollover accident in the Natomas area of Sacramento. A 17-year-old female passenger was also hurt. While merging from the eastbound Interstate 80 onto the southbound Interstate 5 at a high rate of speed, 18-year-old Vladimir Sushinskiy lost control of the red 1998 Acura he was driving and veered from the transition road, causing the vehicle to overturn multiple times before landing on its roof on the westbound Interstate 80 interchange. Kotsura was thrown from the car and died at the scene. Emergency responders transported Tkachuk, the other passenger, and Sushinskiy to an area hospital to receive treatment for moderate trauma. Authorities are investigating the accident.
“When a motor vehicle collision results in serious or fatal trauma, the victims or their families may hold the at-fault driver liable for expenses related to their recoveries or losses by filing injury or wrongful death claims,” explained California car accident attorney James Ballidis.
Passengers accounted for 20 of the 76 fatalities and 3,097 of the 6,611 injuries suffered in crashes that occurred in Sacramento County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Ninety of the collisions that resulted in injury or death in the county that year involved a driver under the age of 21.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Liana Kotsura. We would also like to wish a full recovery to David Tkachuk and the female passenger who was injured.
